Meet Lisa Burton, our Client Executive

25 July 2024

In the latest of our chats with those that have helped shape our new Savitrace fraud detection toolset, we speak with Lisa Burton CEO of Digital Risk Experts. Lisa has been the driving force in designing a product that makes life easier for financial investigators.

Tell us about Digital Risk Experts, and your journey to creating the company?

Most of my career has combined technology and the law. After studying law at University and starting work within legal practice, I did evening classes in programming and database management, because I could see that there was a need to make better use of IT in the support of legal and compliance clients and colleagues.  I built a tech business which I sold to Grant Thornton and then moved into providing consultancy, guidance and direction to a range of businesses needing to ensure compliance in an increasingly complex world. I led the implementation of the first 9 digital courtrooms
in the UK, and have supported the legal profession from digitisation through big data and into the world of AI.

I  led the implementation of critical systems into Volvo and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (Europe) and specialised in delivering services that created the vital bridge between IT, Data and legal experts.  From this Digital Risk Experts was born.

What does success look like to you?

My vision is to support clients in understanding, utilising, governing and managing
the truth of their data. This maximises its benefit and protects them from risk or liability.

I am proud of what we do, and an example of our success was the execution of a programme to identify and remediate 36k ‘right to be forgotten’ requests for a large global market insights corporate. We delivered the end to end solution in just 2 months and at a fraction of the cost they had been quoted by other organisations. If I can help directors meet their accountabilities in the management of Data in a legal context I am happy.

What was your vision when you first started working with Savient?

I met Savient through some mutual contacts and we got talking about the overlap in our two worlds. I have been working with textual e-discovery solutions and knew there was a need for a complimentary tool that supported financial data. Savient with their big data and security heritage felt like an organisation I could work with to produce the solution the market needed.

With Savitrace we have produced a product that is designed for practitioners, by practitioners that makes their job easier and more enjoyable.

What excites you most about what we are doing together at the moment?

The launch of Savitrace, a toolkit that makes life easier, more efficient and more enjoyable for practitioners, whilst fulfilling the requirements of the legal defensibility framing is really exciting. Seeing my vision come to fruition and seeing others get excited about using it and how it will enhance their roles to very rewarding.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

I get frustrated when tech over promises and under delivers, when it lets the end user down, because it could never have succeeded. My role is to ensure that technology makes a difference and that it is embraced, but also that it is the right tool for the right job. AI is not a silver bullet, but it can be a great addition to your toolset if implemented in the right way.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

When I get to help build new technology that fits into the EDRM (Electronic Discovery Reference Model), that has broad coverage in the types and sizes of organisations it can support and I know it will make a difference. Savitrace is a great example of that rewarding feeling, I know it will make a significant difference to so many of those colleagues I have worked with over the years.

What do you do to relax?

I love Pilates, walking, cooking and spending time with family and friends. My two boys are the best diamonds a girl could ever wish for and I treasure all the time we get to spend together. Life is about working creatively  and having fun, and that what I strive to do everyday.
